about

The song is written about a tragic event in 1676 and the erection of Combe Gibbet to hang the bodies of two lovers George Bromham, a married farm labourer from Combe, and Dorothy Newman, a widow of Inkpen, who were together found guilty of the murder of George Bromham's wife and son and were ordered to be hanged "in chaynes near the place of the murder". It's an intriguing story of what still is a quiet country area and the effect it must have had on the local population at the time.
